Year of Songs, Lyrics and Poetry - monthly gatherings

The lyrics they are a-changing

Like many other hobbits, I enjoy songs, poetry, and stories, and the occasional riddle as well. And I suspect many other hobbits are like myself, having lots of ideas for such things but never seeming to get around to writing them down. So to encourage myself and others to put quill to paper, I'm using my position of this year's May Queen to encourage regular gatherings where we can work on ideas together.

You can bring projects (songs, lyrics, poems, stories, and so on) that you already have in the works and you want some feedback on, or you can come and brainstorm and get started on something new.

To help get those creative juices flowing, I've set monthly themes for each gathering. You are welcome to go outside the themes of course, but I find that having a little bit of direction - and accountability - can help get projects started AND finished!

Times: - Wednesdays: 7:30 pm UK time / 2:30 pm Server time (duration 2 hours) - Sundays: 2:30 pm UK time / 9:30 am Server time (duration 2 hours) Location: Three Farthing Stone, Hobbiton-Bywater

Here are the monthly dates and themes: Summer, seaside, and Bard's Day Sun August 10 2:30 pm UK time Bard's Day is coming up on September 2nd so this could be a good time to finally get that poem about our dear Ronald Dwale written down in time for the event. Or perhaps you're attending the Summer Seaside Picnic on August 16 and would like to contribute to the festivities.

Animals - Dog-show, birds, animals, etc Wednesday Sept 17 7:30 pm UK time
The dog show is on September 21, so maybe you're feeling inspired to jot down some odes to our friendly furry (or feathered) friends.

Scary stuff, fall harvest Sunday Oct 12 2:30 pm UK time The fall harvest has arrived, along with entry into the Spooky Burrow, so perhaps you'll be wanting to sing about the lovely fall vegetables or maybe the spooky aspect of this time of year has you inspired.

Food glorious food Wednesday Nov 5, 7:30 pm UK time As the weather gets colder, the meals get bigger and heartier. Time to write our odes to the yummies in our tummies.

Yule-related, winter poems Sunday Dec 7, 2:30 pm UK time The Yule Festival arrives this month, and Nannie also often hosts a winter poem competition, so now's a good time to get those poems ready.

Your Choice Weds Jan 7, 7:30 pm UK time We can pick a theme or allow this to be a free-for-all day to work on any project. Needing some inspiration? Here are a few ideas that don't have a dedicated day: Winter coziness; Strange happenings (like the day everyone wore yellow, etc); Puns and word-play; Ents, Entwives, forests, trees; Famous Folk (in-story or LOTRO NPCs) of the Shire.

Pie Day (in March) Sunday Feb 14, 2:30 pm UK time Pie day is coming in March, and yes, I know we've already had a month dedicated to food, but I think we can all agree that another month dedicated to writing about one of our favorite foods is a fine idea!

Bullroarer Took related Weds March 4, 7:30 pm UK time Bullroarer Day is coming on March 17! You have your green outfit but do you have a creative endeavour about the fellow or the event rolling around your head? Time to knock it out and make it whole!

May (Royalty) tributes Sunday April 19, 2:30 pm UK time The May Queen and King nominations are coming and perhaps you have some thoughts you'd like folks to know. Or maybe you've got a story about another royalty, like King Argeleb II who gave the Shire to the hobbits, or some other far-off king or queen.

Farewells and transitions Weds May 13, 7:30 pm UK time My time as May Queen will come to an end this month, and I'm sure I'll be filled with thoughts of farewells and endings. But with every end, there is a new beginning, and I'll happily join the ranks of former May Queens while welcoming in the new royalty. Perhaps you too have some thoughts on endings, transitions, and new beginnings.

Whether you're a regular contributor to entertainment at Green Dragon Fridays or have never written a poem in your life, I hope that you feel inspired to join in. I also hope that you have fun and feel that your life is richer by the end of our monthly series! If you have any thoughts, questions, input or spare pies, feel free to contact me!
